The Lake District is one of the best places in England to holiday with your dog. Here’s where to walk, where to stay, and how to make the most of a pet-friendly break — all from a quieter base in Ulverston.
If you have a dog, the Lake District is paradise. Miles of open fells for off-lead running, forests with shaded trails, lakes where they can swim, and a culture that genuinely welcomes four-legged visitors.
Unlike beach holidays where dogs face seasonal bans, or city breaks where they’re stuck on pavements, the Lake District gives dogs what they actually want — space, water, interesting smells, and room to explore. And because the landscape varies so much — from gentle coastal paths to dramatic fell walks — there’s something for every breed and fitness level, from elderly spaniels to tireless collies.
The real bonus? Many of the best pubs and cafes have outdoor seating and water bowls ready. This is dog country, and the locals know it.
Hotels can be stressful for dogs. Unfamiliar corridors, other guests, noise restrictions, and limited outdoor access all add up. A self-catering apartment solves every one of those problems.
You get your own space with your own front door, so your dog can settle properly. There’s no worry about barking disturbing hotel neighbours. A kitchenette means you can prepare meals without hunting for dog-friendly restaurants every evening. And you can stick to your dog’s normal routine — regular walks, feeding times, and a quiet space to rest between adventures.
At Lonsdale House, we offer four dedicated pet-friendly apartments in the heart of Ulverston — a market town perfectly placed for exploring the southern Lake District.
Each pet-friendly apartment comes with complimentary extras so you can travel light: a cosy dog basket and blanket, pet towels (essential after muddy Lake District walks), a drinking bowl, and dog treats to welcome your four-legged friend.
Our apartments include:
Coniston — sleeps 3, double bed, fully equipped kitchenette, spacious walk-in shower. Named after the lake that’s just 10 minutes away by car.
Ambleside — sleeps 3, twin beds, kitchenette, walk-in shower. The twin configuration works well for friends travelling with a dog.
Ullswater (Garden View) — sleeps 3, garden views over our Secret Garden, kitchenette. Perfect for dogs who like to watch the world go by.
Derwent — sleeps 3, double bed, kitchenette, walk-in shower. A comfortable retreat after a long day on the fells.
All four apartments include free private parking, high-speed WiFi, Smart TV, and access to our Secret Garden — a peaceful enclosed courtyard where your dog can stretch their legs safely between walks.
Not all “dog-friendly” accommodation is created equal. Here’s what makes a real difference: ground-floor access or easy entry (important for older dogs), private outdoor space where your dog can be off-lead safely, on-site cleaning facilities for muddy gear, and direct communication with owners who can recommend local vets in an emergency.
Ulverston’s location gives you access to an incredible range of walks — from gentle strolls to serious fell days — all within a short drive.
Bardsea Coastal Path is our top recommendation for a relaxed walk. It’s flat, scenic, and stretches along Morecambe Bay with vast sandy beaches where dogs can run off-lead at low tide. The views across to the Arnside Knott coastline are stunning, and the path is accessible for dogs of all ages and fitness levels. Just 10 minutes by car from Lonsdale House.
Ulverston Town Trail is a 30-to-45-minute loop past the town’s historic sites. It’s ideal for an evening stroll after settling into your apartment, with the bonus of passing several dog-friendly pubs if you fancy a stop.
Swarthmoor to Ulverston is a gentle walk through quiet lanes and woodland sections. It passes Swarthmoor Hall, the historic Quaker meeting house, and is a manageable distance for puppies and senior dogs.
Hoad Monument is the classic Ulverston walk. The steep section up the hill is rewarding for dogs who love a climb, and once you’re on the fell, they can run off-lead with panoramic views in every direction. The descent can be done via a different route for variety.
Coniston Water Shoreline offers flat-to-moderate lakeside walking with plenty of opportunities for your dog to swim. The water is clean, the access points are easy, and there’s a dog-friendly cafe nearby in the Coniston village for post-walk refreshment.
Grizedale Forest has miles of marked trails through woodland, with varying difficulty levels. Dogs love the forest environment — shade in summer, interesting terrain year-round — and the Grizedale cafe welcomes dogs.
Coniston Old Man is a serious fell walk with incredible summit views. Dogs need to be fit and comfortable on steep, rocky terrain. The ascent is demanding but the reward — views across to Windermere, Morecambe Bay, and the central fells — is spectacular. Off-lead is possible on much of the ascent.
Catbells from Keswick is one of the Lake District’s most dramatic ridge walks. It’s about 45 minutes from Ulverston, but worth the drive for the experience. Dogs with good recall can be off-lead on the ridge.
After a long walk, you need somewhere welcoming. Ulverston and the surrounding area have plenty of dog-friendly options.
In Ulverston itself, several pubs along Market Street welcome dogs in their bar areas and beer gardens. The Bay Horse, just outside town, has a riverside terrace where well-behaved dogs are welcome.
In Coniston, the Black Bull Inn is a classic fell-walking pub that has been welcoming muddy boots and wet dogs for centuries. And in Cartmel, the Cavendish Arms is a dog-friendly pub steps from the famous priory.
Pack for mud. Even in summer, the fells can be wet. Bring old towels, a waterproof coat for yourself, and paw wipes for the car.
Check tide times at Bardsea. The Morecambe Bay tides move fast. Check times before walking on the sand, and never venture far from shore.
Keep dogs on leads near livestock. This is farming country. Even the friendliest dog should be on a lead around sheep, particularly during lambing season (March to May).
Bring water. Not all streams and tarns are safe for drinking. Carry fresh water, especially on fell walks in warm weather.
Book accommodation early. Pet-friendly apartments are popular, particularly during school holidays and bank holiday weekends. Book direct for the best availability.
